Back to School Makeup | Tips & Tricks

If your school's anything like mine, then it's pretty likely that you'll be unable to rock up on the first day back with a bold smokey eye and even bolder red lips and get away scot-free. In fact, at my school, makeup is pretty much banned unless you keep it to a 'natural minimum'. Yes, this sucks, and yes, I could put forward multiple justifications as to why makeup should be allowed, but instead I'll suck it up and get on with today's blogpost: a makeup look which hopefully obides by the school's rules.

When it comes to school, I tend to opt out of wearing foundation, as not only can it make your skin appear somewhat falsely flawless, it can also be pretty dehydrating. However, if you still desire a decent coverage to even out your complexion, a BB cream or tinted moisturiser is always the way to go. Both of these products also solve the problem of dehydration, as luckily, they come with a built-in moisturiser, perfect for keeping your skin nourished throughout the long, hard days at school. If you suffer from oily or just simply shiny skin, the perfect solution to mattifying this is to use a facial powder. Be careful not to overload on this, however, as too much can dehydrate your skin.

Elf Complete Coverage Concealer // Real Techniques Detailer Brush // Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer
For concealer, make sure to find a shade that's as close to your natural skin colour as possible and apply to the necessary regions of your face. However, try to be quite sparing with it so as to avoid looking too overdone!

Elf Baked Blush in 'Peachy Cheeky' // So Susan Water-based Luminizer // Natural Collection Blushed Cheeks in 'Pink Cloud'
Blusher is sort of a tricky one for me; being quite naturally flushed in the cheeks anyway, it's never really been a necessity. However, if blusher just so happens to be your ultimate essential, a tiny sweep here or there is unlikely to cause too much of an uproar! Just try to avoid shimmery shades, and make sure to blend it in thoroughly so as not to end up with flamingo-pink streaks smeared across your cheeks! If you desire a highlighter to enhance your cheekbones, try using a minimal amount of baked blush or water-based highlighter to produce a slight luminosity.

Of course, dense eye makeup is a complete giveaway to the fact that you're wearing makeup, so to avoid getting a detention, it's always best to seriously cut down to just the necessities for this area. For me, this would simply be a light coat of a similarly light-coloured mascara just to enhance my lashes in a natural-looking fashion. However, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous (and don't mind getting a detention if you're caught out) a sweep of a neutral-toned eyeshadow would do no harm. Again, try to avoid strikingly shimmery shades, and make sure to stick to applying eyeshadow just on the lid.

Although lipstick really does accentuate the shape and colour of your lips, wearing a bright shade to school is pretty much a no-no. If it's just a slight pop of colour you desire, simply apply a sheer coat of a neutral lipgloss to give a modest tint to your lips. However, if your school is too strict to even allow that, lip balm is the perfect alternative; not only does it give your lips a subtle luminosity, it also keeps them hydrated throughout the day.

I hope that you enjoyed today's post and that I may have given you a few pointers in the right direction when it comes to planning makeup for school. What are your tips and tricks when it comes to back to school makeup?
